History/ Herstory/ Theirstory Project
My artwork is named “Petals of Effort”. It shows simplicity and courtesy. The surrounding colors adorn the work a comfortable and free life in the neighbourhood. These are some images that are used in my artwork.
From 3 pictures of my neighbour, you can see around there are many trees, short but very solid because the weather in South Vietnam is very hot all year round so planting trees is very important to have shade for everyone. The houses are closed together because the land is not large, so people build tall houses to have more space. I like a light and restless life so I used fabric as the material for this work. Sitting together, drinking glasses of sugarcane juice or having lunch together; show simplicity, simplicity and closeness to each other. In my neighborhood, I often see women working very hard to make a living and they often help each other.
The Ba Ba shirt is the first outfit I think of. It symbolizes the beauty of the noble soul as well as the beauty and gentleness of South Vietnamese women. Farmers in the Mekong Delta used to wear black “Ba Ba shirt” to go to rice paddies because they were both clean and easy to wash. They were made of fabrics that dry quickly. In the past, the peasants and the farmers, especially in the Mekong Delta wear the black ao ba ba like a uniform when working on paddy fields every day due to its convenience. People in the delta also love to put on this comfortable Vietnamese garment in daily activities as well as on special occasions. When dark colours such as black, brown are worn like working attire, bright colours are used in festivals and performances.
I hope my audience understands the Southern Vietnam traditional clothes and how my community and family helped me a lot in the past. Nature and hard-working women to make their living are the petals to create a beautiful flower.
I think my work is successful, because it shows what I want to say, and send the message to the audience. I give myself 8 for Creativity and 9 for Craftsmanship because I never make clothes before and it took too much time for me to draw and cut the papers.
